Description This gallery contains one binder created by Faith Ringgold that features 32 images of her masks and other sculptures used in performances from 1975-1988. According to her memoir, Ringgold was inspired "by the African tradition of combining storytelling, dance, music, costumes, and masks into a single production." Ringgold used performances as an alternative way to tell her story when she ran into difficulty trying to publish her memoir. Highlights include news articles, advertisements, and scripts of her performances such as her first performance "The Wake and Resurrection of the Bicentennial Negro." Also from this performance is a sketch of four masks with some of the character names including Bena, Buba, and Moma. Researchers interested in the development of a performance can find notes and drafts of Ringgold's "Change" performances in the archival section of this series.
