Collection David C. Driskell Papers
System of arrangement This sub-series is arranged into two parts. These materials are primarily housed in folders labeled "General Correspondence" because they encompass an array of topics with letters sent from friends, artists, colleagues, etc. These records are arranged chronologically. The remaining folders cover specific subjects and reflect the organizational structure Prof. Driskell himself maintained. These records have been kept in their original order because they offer context into their creation, use, and disposition. To increase access they have been arranged alphabetically by folder title and then chronologically.
Description This sub-series consists of correspondence David C. Driskell sent and received between 1962 and 2011. As a whole, these letters chronicle Prof. Driskell's personal relationships with fellow artists, colleagues, and friends. These materials are unique to the Driskell Papers because they focus on his personal life rather than his professional pursuits. Additionally, these correspondences reveal Prof. Driskell's everyday activities, interests, and relationships.

Some of the most notable items in this sub-series include correspondence between Prof. Driskell and his close friends-- many being fellow artists. Researchers interested in reading more about Prof. Driskell's relationships with artists should also examine Series 5: "Artists and Individuals." Other letters were written from former students, admirers of Prof. Driskell's work, university administrators, and in a few cases government officials. Most of these records can be found in the folders titled "General Correspondence." Researchers interested in correspondence from Prof. Driskell's family should refer to sub-series 2: "Family and Biographical Information." Some materials have been restricted to respect the wishes of the donor and to protect sensitive personal identifiable information such as social security numbers.
